Periodontal disease is complex, progressive, and difficult to properly diagnose. While dentists can provide information directly related to a patient’s teeth, supporting information about lifestyle can be missed, making early diagnosis and risk profile challenging. Further, there was no single application or system capable of guiding patients through the diagnosis and treatment process in compliance with the Periodontal Staging Guidelines provided by the American Academy of Periodontology. Dental professionals would often rely on information included in their electronic medical records, their personal assessment, and memory of these important guidelines.
Front line dental care is often provided by hygienists not fully versed in the latest periodontal risk assessment.
Even patients that receive a correct diagnosis might have difficulty understanding what it means and what treatments are available.
The periodontal risk assessment algorithm is complex, based on multiple factors, and could be completed incorrectly if done manually.
Studies indicate that patients respond better when using interactive devices and other aids.
Our client was hoping to change this dynamic by offering a unique mobile experience that could guide patients and dental practitioners through the process. They wanted to make access to the application free of charge and leverage their existing sales team to promote access and awareness to drive engagement.
Korcomptenz was selected as the partner of choice to create a Periodontal Disease Health Assessment mobile application and progressive web application version featuring a medically approved algorithm to assess the unique risk profile of each individual patient.
We collaborated with the customer to identify the user experience, algorithm, and security needs of the of the program before putting forward a plan that addresses both the need to properly diagnose patients and patient privacy. The project included extensive collaboration with dental professionals at critical stages in the development of the proprietary algorithm. The customer’s medical legal review team also participated in the process to protect patient privacy.
The development of the app proceeded in an agile manner with key aspects of the interface and data fields review and approved prior to implementation of the final algorithm and a thorough user acceptance testing phase. Further, the app was initial launched on tablet devices as part of a pilot program, then made available online in a progressive web application, and ultimately in a phone specific version.
“The MyPerioHealth™ app will help enhance the understanding of periodontal disease by providing patients with the ability to have greater understanding and ownership of their disease. Armed with their periodontal score and the ramifications of unchecked periodontal disease, we believe patients will be more accepting of the treatment recommendations they receive from their doctors,” the customer explained.
The overall result was a resource for dental professionals described as the “first of its kind” in the market by Dentistry Today. “The MyPerioHealth education app was designed as a resource for dental professionals when using the Periodontal Staging and Grading Guidelines established by the American Academy of Periodontology to help encourage dialogue and offer an interactive oral health assessment in a patient friendly, portable way,” said the vice president and general manager of the customer.
“By responding to a series of short questions, a patient and their dental care professional can obtain a wealth of important information regarding the patient’s periodontal health status, including the stage and grade, which are vital for treatment planning and determining the maintenance interval to help manage the disease.”
